Malaysia's Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has made it clear that the country has no plans to allow a second casino. In his speech at the Qatar Economic Forum (QEF) 2024, he emphasized that Malaysia will focus on developing other industries such as digital transformation, energy transition and artificial intelligence.

Reply on the QEF forum

During the QEF 2024 plenary meeting in Qatar, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reiterated his position on a second casino in Malaysia. He stressed that the country's focus on other key sectors will contribute to economic growth and development.

More than casino discussions

The Prime Minister's visit to Qatar was part of his three-day official visit to coincide with the invitation of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar. Anwar spoke at the forum to discuss not only casino issues, but also the future of economic cooperation between the two countries.

Strengthening other industries

The Prime Minister, who also serves as Finance Minister, emphasized the importance of advancing digital transformation, energy transition and artificial intelligence to drive Malaysia's economic growth. These sectors, he said, play a key role in the future of the country.

The only casino in Malaysia

There is currently only one casino operating in Malaysia, licensed by Genting since 1969. The Prime Minister's position clearly indicates that there are no plans to expand the gambling industry in the country.

Response to accusations

There were earlier rumors about a possible second casino opening in Johor's Forest City, but the Prime Minister has repeatedly denied such accusations. Groups allegedly linked to the speculation have also denied the claims, threatening to take legal action against the rumor mongers.
