Kansas last month amended its Class III Tribal Gambling Treaty with the Potawatomi Prairie Nation to allow the tribe to offer sports betting at its casino on tribal land in Mayette, Kansas, about 25 miles north of Topeka.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs of the U.S. Department of the Interior released a notice in the Federal Register on Tuesday approving the treaty amendment and allowing it to take effect immediately.

The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation is the first tribe in Kansas that has been allowed to offer bookmakers and aims to launch their bookmaker by the fourth quarter of this year. Tribal Council Chairman Joseph "Zeke" Rupnik told a local television station that the betting shop could open as early as September.

If all goes according to plan, players will be able to bet on most NFL and American football games this year.

“Initially we will have a sports betting room located in the casino and we hope to offer a mobile app,” Rupnik told Kansas City-based Fox 4.

Playing field level
Kansas legalized sports betting at its commercial casinos last year, and Rupnik said he looks forward to being on the "same playing field" with these competitors.

To be honest, it was a pretty cumbersome process and I really didn't think it would be completed this year," Rupnik told a Fox affiliate. "But thanks to the governor's office, their leadership, and the leadership of the elected members of the House of Representatives and the Senate, we were able to do it."

Sports betting in Kansas started in September 2022 and the available operators are Barstool Sportsbook, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel and PointsBet.

Bookmakers placed over $98 million worth of bets to generate $4 million in revenue in June, the latest month for which data is available, according to the Kansas Lottery. Approximately $3 million was wagered in person, while over $94 million came through online bookmakers.

State share of June revenue was $409,425
