Against the backdrop of his impending departure from his position at the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) in October, René Jansen, the organization's current chairman, gave a farewell speech at the Gaming in Holland conference. This talk was a landmark event where Jansen summarized his work and discussed important topics related to the Dutch gaming industry.

KSA Performance Assessment

Rene Jansen began his speech by reflecting on his time at KSA and the actions the organization has taken during his tenure. He highlighted the significant changes and reforms that have taken place in the Dutch gaming industry in recent years, including the adoption of the Remote Gambling Act.

Current State of the Online Gambling Market

One of the key topics of the speech was the current state of the online gambling market in the Netherlands. Jansen noted that there are currently 29 licensed online gambling operators in the country, which indicates significant growth and development in this sector. He stressed the need for greater accountability in the industry given its rapid expansion.

Responsible Gaming

Rene Jansen paid special attention to the issues of responsible gambling. He spoke about the amended Responsible Gaming Policy Rule that was recently published by the KSA. Jansen expressed his pride that these changes were implemented as quickly as possible and in accordance with current legislation. He also announced the creation of a temporary online duty of care unit, which will begin work in September and will oversee operators' compliance with the new rules.

Prohibition on Non-Targeted Advertising

Jansen noted that since July 2023, the Netherlands has had a ban on non-targeted gambling advertising. He acknowledged that the ban had caused a lot of controversy and created some difficulties for KSA as a regulator. However, he stressed the importance of working to give people the ability to exclude themselves from gambling advertising, especially in the lead-up to major sporting events such as Euro 2024, the Olympics and the Tour de France.

A Call for Moderation

Addressing gambling providers, Jansen called for moderation in advertising activities. He emphasized that in the context of close attention to the gaming market, it is extremely important that each market participant shows their best side. Jansen also said KSA would be running an awareness campaign in the coming months aimed at helping consumers, especially young people, resist gambling temptations.

Combating Illegal Operations

Towards the end of his speech, René Jansen noted that the KSA will continue to monitor sewage levels and make every effort to combat the growth of illegal offers in the Dutch gambling market. He stressed the importance of taking measures to protect players and ensure a safe gaming experience.

Rene Jansen concluded his speech by emphasizing the importance of taking care of the players. He urged those attending the conference to ensure that safeguards are in place against problem gambling, stressing that the welfare of gamblers should always be a priority. Jansen ended his speech on a positive note, expressing hope for the further development and prosperity of the gaming industry in the Netherlands.
