Monthly increase and decrease compared to May
Macau's Gambling Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) has released gaming revenue data for June 2024. Gross revenue for the month was MOP$17.7 billion ($2.21 billion), representing 16.4% year-on-year growth. However, compared to May, revenues fell by about 12.4%, indicating a temporary slowdown in the sector.
Gross gaming revenue in Macau has shown positive growth throughout the year. Total gross revenue for the period was MOP$113.8 billion, up 41.9% compared to June 2023. Despite reaching the significant milestone of MOP$100 billion this year, June's MOP$17.7 billion remains the lowest monthly revenue. The pace of growth has also slowed since February, when the annual revenue increase was 72.7%.
Attendance and its impact on income
Data on the number of visitors in June has not yet been published, however, analyzing the figures since the beginning of the year, a downward trend can be seen. February 2024 was the most successful month in terms of arrivals, reaching 3,293,564 visitors. There was a decline thereafter, although arrivals in May increased slightly by 3.5% compared to April to 2,692,191. These fluctuations in attendance directly affect the income of the gambling business.
In June, the Macau government approved a five-year concession for STDM Macau to operate the Macau Outer Harbor ferry terminal. This decision may affect the improvement of transport infrastructure and, consequently, an increase in the flow of visitors to the city’s gambling establishments.
Comparison with other countries
To better understand global trends in the gambling industry, it is worth paying attention to other markets. For example, the Danish Gambling Authority Spillemyndigheden published results for May 2024. Gross gaming revenue (GGR) in Denmark reached DKK 571 million (USD 82.46 million). This figure reflects stable growth and highlights that the gambling sector remains a significant part of the economy of many countries.
Gross gaming revenue growth in Macau of 16.4% in June 2024 shows positive trends in the sector, despite a temporary decline compared to the previous month. An important factor remains the number of visitors, which directly affects the income of gambling establishments. New concessions and infrastructure improvements could help further the growth and development of the gaming market in Macau.
