From 1 January 2025, all game providers wishing to provide their services to gambling operators licensed in Denmark will be required to obtain a license from the Danish Gambling Authority. This innovation is aimed at strengthening control and improving the quality of gambling services provided in the country.
Start of accepting applications
Applications for licenses will be accepted from September 1, 2024. The Danish Gambling Authority has developed detailed guidelines and has made online application forms available on its official website. All interested parties can find the necessary information in the "Game Suppliers" section.
The innovations include mandatory testing and verification of games, gaming platforms, business procedures and systems of game providers by accredited testing companies. These tests must comply with the Danish Gambling Authority's new certification program before any games can be offered to gambling operators.
Certification program
A revised version of the certification program, which will clarify the responsibilities of game operators and providers, is in development. The new program is expected to be completed and open for consultation by mid-July 2024, with full implementation scheduled for 1 January 2025. Updated standard reports will also be available from this date.
Coinciding with the introduction of provider licenses, the Danish Gambling Authority will launch a new portal for managing gaming certificates, known as the "Gaming Registry". This portal is planned to be operational by October 1, 2024. Game Provider applicants will receive credentials to upload their information and game certificates as part of the application process.
Current certificates
It is noteworthy that existing gaming certificates and certificates under the current program will remain valid. This means that games or systems that have already been tested and verified will not need to be re-certified. However, as of July 1, 2025, compliance with the new certification program will become mandatory, and gaming providers and operators are encouraged to adopt the updated program as soon as possible to ensure compliance.
The introduction of new licensing and certification requirements for gaming providers in Denmark is an important step towards strengthening the control of gambling and ensuring high quality services in this area. Game providers and operators must closely monitor changes and prepare for new regulations to continue to operate in compliance with the law and provide safe and quality gaming products to their customers.
