Apple is developing an artificial intelligence (AI) tool, including a chatbot similar to ChatGPT, Bloomberg reported July 19.

Members of the company have reportedly been working on an internal framework for large language models called "Ajax" since 2022. This development, in turn, led to the creation of an artificial intelligence chatbot internally referred to as "Apple GPT".

Employees use the chatbot to summarize texts and product prototypes. While this tool has grown in importance within a company, it is still used on a small scale: it requires special approval and should not be used to develop customer-facing features. Supposedly, several teams have come together to work on the project, and some of the recent work is focused on resolving privacy issues that may arise.

Only internal tool

Bloomberg noted that Apple does not yet have any strategy by which it could offer users an artificial intelligence tool. He also noted that the company's main publicly offered artificial intelligence product to date - the voice assistant Siri - has not been developed much recently.

However, it is noted that the company has made progress in artificial intelligence in other areas, including advances in photos and search on the iPhone. The company is also expected to introduce an improved version of auto-correction in the near future.

Whether or not Apple releases its AI tools publicly, it must compete with other similar tools such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Microsoft's Bing AI.

Past comments by Apple CEO Tim Cook suggest the firm is planning a gradual introduction of AI. In May 2023, Cook said that Apple considered AI to be "huge", but noted that the firm "will continue to weave it into [its] products in a very thoughtful manner".
