The Dutch Gaming Authority (KSA) recently announced a significant update to its API for the Cruks system, aimed at improving the handling of personal data and strengthening controls beyond players. This update represents an important step towards improving user protection and optimizing the performance of gambling service providers.

What are Cruks?

Cruks (Central Gambling Exclusion Register) is a system that allows players who wish to exclude themselves from gambling to register and thereby prevent themselves from participating in the games. Currently, Cruks has approximately 75,000 registered users. Gambling providers are required to check all players on this register to ensure they are not listed in the self-exclusion system.

Problems of the Existing System

Cruks was originally designed to work with standard personal data. However, during the verification process there were problems with handling exceptional cases. For example, some players' identification documents only contain their first or last name, or indicate invalid dates of birth (for example, 0-0-1968). These anomalies caused failures in the verification process by gambling providers.

The updated API aims to address these issues by providing more accurate and smoother data validation. The new system will ensure there are no glitches in the verification process, ensuring better compliance and improved player protection.

KSA has provided all gambling providers with detailed instructions on how to migrate to the new API. These instructions include steps and recommendations on how to gracefully migrate to the updated system while minimizing potential disruptions.

Strengthening Security in Slot Machines

Earlier this month, the KSA called for stronger security responsibilities at gaming machines. The initiative was prompted by a series of inspections carried out in gambling halls in the Netherlands in December and January. Inspections have shown that while most venues recognize their responsibility to ensure safety, there remain significant areas for improvement to prevent problem gambling.

In addition to internal updates, Saudi Arabia last month increased penalties for the use of illegal gaming terminals, demonstrating a global push for stricter regulation and oversight of gambling.

The update to the Cruks API is an important step in improving player protection and compliance with gambling regulations. Gambling service providers must carefully follow the instructions provided to ensure a successful transition to the new system, which will provide a safer and more reliable environment for all market participants.
