The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has announced significant changes to its governance structure with the appointments of Katie Carr and Tom Baker to key roles. The appointments are designed to strengthen the organisation’s strategic approach to sustainability and social responsibility, supporting the long-term goals of British horseracing.
BHA Appointments: New Focus on Sustainability and Social ImpactKatie Carr and Tom Baker have been appointed to new roles that will be central to the delivery of the BHA’s strategy. The appointments are funded by the Racing Foundation and overseen by the Industry Programme Group, underlining the seriousness of the racing industry’s commitment to sustainability.
Katie Carr has been appointed Head of Sustainability. Formerly with Goodwood Group, Carr will be responsible for developing the industry’s approach to sustainable racing and equine breeding. Her key objectives will be to reduce the environmental risks associated with climate change, meet legal requirements and public expectations, and effectively manage the natural environment.
Tom Baker will take up the role of Head of Social Impact. On a year-long secondment from the Jockey Club, he will be responsible for setting British racing’s collective social and community performance targets. Baker will work with organisations such as Racing Together and Racing to School to maximise the positive impact of the sport on local communities and society as a whole.
BHA Long-Term Goals and StrategyThe appointments are part of the BHA’s wider sustainability and social impact strategy. As BHA Director of Strategy and Change **Alison Enticknap** highlighted, “environmental sustainability and social impact have been identified as priorities for British racing.” Enticknap expressed delight at the appointments of Carr and Baker, noting that they bring subject matter expertise and valuable experience of the racing industry to the organisation.
The BHA intends to continue to work on developing its long-term strategy, building on the support provided by the Racing Foundation. This effort aims to identify the necessary actions at an industry level to support and accelerate progress in the areas of sustainability and social responsibility.
As part of the new initiatives, the BHA will seek to improve environmental sustainability and enhance the positive impact of racing on society, working to deliver specific programs and projects in these areas.
