And it will affect the travel of the thousands of poker players who do it every year.

For those heading to Barcelona, Cyprus or Prague for the upcoming European Poker Tour (EPT) events before the end of the year, there will be no problem. The law will come into force no earlier than January 1.

What poker players need to know

Currently, a passport is required for US citizens when entering and returning from overseas, including European countries, for entertainment or poker. This will continue, but in 2024 there will be another step in obtaining permission to visit 30 European countries.

Even if you regularly travel abroad, starting in 2024 you must apply for authorization through the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) . You can do this online at the ETIAS website, where you will also pay an administration fee of $7.79. According to the site, in most cases, approval will be done instantly, so it's a simple and painless process, except for those who may have some travel restrictions.

Once approved, it will be valid for three years. Tourists may visit a European Union (EU) country for a period not exceeding 90 days within a 180-day period.

Who should apply?

Those traveling to popular poker tournaments in 2024 such as the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) or most EPT destinations would be wise to apply for an ETIAS authorization well in advance.

United States citizens are not the only currently visa-free travelers who will need to apply before traveling to the 30 European ETIAS countries. Residents of 57 other countries will have to do the same. Canada, Brazil, South Korea, New Zealand and Mexico are among these countries.

This will only affect travel to EU countries. Therefore, this does not apply to trips to the UK. The full list of ETIAS travel authorization requirements is as follows:

Citizens of the United Kingdom will also need to obtain an ETIAS permit when traveling to EU countries. However, those who are citizens of EU countries will not need to apply for a permit when traveling from country to country.

When applying for an ETIAS authorization, you must provide passport details, occupation, planned travel dates, personal information, and indicate your criminal history, if any.
