In response to major cybersecurity events, Resort World on the Las Vegas Strip has begun conducting daily room inspections. Guests have been advised that these inspections will occur even if “Do Not Disturb” signs are posted.

Enhanced Security Following Major Cyberattacks

The inspections, described as brief, visual, and unobtrusive, coincide with the Black Hat USA convention at Mandalay Bay, which runs through Aug. 8, and the upcoming Def Con 32 at the Las Vegas Convention Center from Aug. 8-11. These events attract a diverse audience of cybersecurity professionals, including government officials, corporate executives, and hackers interested in learning about the latest advancements and challenges in the field.

Resort World began these precautions on August 5, with plans to complete them by August 11. The hotel released a statement emphasizing its commitment to guest privacy and convenience, assuring that inspections will be conducted with minimal disruption.

Responding to Recent Cyberattacks

In light of recent cyberattack incidents on major casino operators, Resort World has stepped up its security measures. Last year, MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment both suffered serious cyberattacks. MGM refused to pay the ransom, resulting in over $100 million in lost business. In contrast, Caesars agreed to pay a $15 million ransom, quickly restoring its systems.

Security Enhancements at Las Vegas Hotels

While no direct links have been established between the conventions and the cyberattacks on MGM and Caesars, Resort World is not taking any chances. The hotel emphasized that such inspections are standard practice during periods of heightened risk, especially in a city known for its large events and attractions.

The hotel assured guests that the measures are intended to enhance both physical and cybersecurity. In a statement, management noted that the inspections are a precautionary measure to maintain the integrity of the hotel’s services and protect guests, business partners, and employees from potential cyber threats.

Daily room inspections have become more common at Las Vegas hotels since the tragic shooting at the Route 91 Harvest festival in 2017. Recent cyber attacks have only heightened the need for vigilance.

Guests were informed via email that all rooms will be subject to daily inspections, regardless of the presence of “Do Not Disturb” signs. The hotel’s actions reflect a broader trend in the industry to enhance security measures and preventative measures in the face of growing cyber threats.
