Many people believe in lucky numbers, special dates, or even signs of fate when they buy lottery tickets. One Mecklenburg County, North Carolina man was among those who unexpectedly struck it lucky thanks to a lottery ticket when his car needed repairs.
So that’s the story of Andrzej Kielbon from Matthews, who recently encountered car troubles. Instead of getting upset, he decided to try his luck in a digital instant game before heading to the repair shop.
Using the North Carolina Bison Bonanza lottery game, he managed to win a massive $379,747 jackpot. Kielbon recently visited the lottery headquarters to claim his winnings.
When asked what he planned to do with the money, the lucky winner admitted that he was planning to go to Hawaii. He also said that he wanted to replace his old car with a new one, possibly an electric one.
In North Carolina, lottery winnings are subject to federal and state taxes. After all deductions, Kelbon received exactly $271,520.
Recalling the moment he bought the ticket, Kelbon said: “I was going to get my car serviced. I woke up too early and decided to play. If I hadn’t woken up early, I wouldn’t have bought the ticket.”
The lucky player bought a $2 ticket on Thursday and won the jackpot. Although he admitted that he plays the lottery for fun, he said: “I didn’t think it was real because I wasn’t fully awake yet.”
Kelbon will now remember the day he was supposed to go get his car serviced and unexpectedly won the jackpot, beating the odds of 1 in 15.5 million.
The North Carolina Lottery offers a variety of digital instant games at different price levels. Bison Bonanza is one of nearly two dozen such games. Entries range from $0.50 to $30, and the overall odds of winning are 1 in 3.59.
The odds of winning the EPIC jackpot are 1 in 31,034,483. However, the odds improve based on the ticket price, meaning a $2 ticket has twice the chance of winning the jackpot.
After Kelbon won the top prize on Bison Bonanza, the jackpot returned to $50,000. At the time of writing, the progressive jackpot was valued at $130,662.
