The German Gambling Control Authority (GGL) has decided to strengthen cooperation with regional state institutions dealing with gambling addiction. The initiative aims to improve communication and joint action between the various authorities responsible for preventing gambling addiction and providing support to victims.

Cooperation with Bavaria: First steps in combating gambling addiction

On 29 August 2024, GGL took the first step in implementing its plan. GGL Director Ronald Benter met with Konrad Landgraf, who heads the State Office for Combating Gambling Addiction in Bavaria (LSG). This meeting was the starting point for more in-depth discussions on joint work between GGL and regional authorities. During the meeting, the institutes exchanged ideas on legislative initiatives and addiction prevention measures, and discussed the unique challenges faced by individual regions.

Landgraf gave Benter a detailed account of the work of LSG in Bavaria, emphasizing the role of the department in the overall system of support for addicts. He noted that the counseling services provided by LSG are becoming increasingly popular, especially online. Landgraf cited the website buwei.de as an example, which is a key resource for information on gambling addiction support services throughout Germany.

Preparations for the National Day against Gambling Addiction: Important Topics and Prospects

During the meeting, preparations for the National Day against Gambling Addiction, which will take place on September 25, 2024, were also discussed. This day is organized by state institutions to raise awareness of the risks of gambling addiction and emphasize the importance of accessible help for those suffering from this problem.

Benter noted that such meetings play an important role in forming a complete picture of the state of gambling addiction in Germany. He emphasized that player protection and public awareness remain key priorities for the GGL. Cooperation with regional authorities allows the GGL to improve its approaches to solving gambling problems.

Future steps and plans for cooperation

The GGL intends to continue to work on strengthening ties with state institutions. In October 2024, Benter plans to visit the State Office for Combating Gambling Addiction in North Rhine-Westphalia. This visit will give the GGL the opportunity to gain new insights from local experience and discuss possible ways to improve cooperation.

In addition, a joint meeting of representatives of all state offices for combating gambling addiction is planned for the autumn. This meeting will aim to exchange good practices and explore new ideas for improving assistance for those suffering from gambling addiction.

As part of its further work, the GGL plans to present a comprehensive overview of the gambling industry in Germany to the Bundestag in 2026. This report will assess the impact of the regulations introduced in 2021 on the country's gambling industry and propose new measures to protect against gambling advertising. The main goal is to ensure that German regulations are in line with modern developments in the gambling industry and that the health and safety of the population remains a priority.
