After nearly 30 Mega Millions draws, a single ticket sold in Texas has won a record jackpot. On Tuesday, the lucky player matched all the winning numbers: the white balls 1, 2, 16, 24 and 66, as well as the gold Mega Ball 6.
The lucky ticket owner won a whopping $800 million. However, by choosing the cash payout, he could walk away with $404.2 million in cash — a sum significantly smaller than the jackpot, but still a huge, life-changing win.
The ticket was purchased at Murphy USA 8848 in Sugar Land, Texas. This was the largest Mega Millions jackpot ever won in September.
Third Jackpot in 2024
The $800 million jackpot was the seventh-largest in Mega Millions history. Despite the huge amount, it was only the third win this year.
Before the Texas win, the last major Mega Millions jackpot was won in Illinois on June 4. That ticket, purchased through the Illinois Lottery’s mobile app, won $552 million.
Another huge win this year was in New Jersey in March. On March 26, a ticket won a staggering $1.128 billion jackpot. However, even after months of waiting, the prize remains unclaimed.
Texas laws allow players who win $1 million or more to remain anonymous. This means the lucky winner may never be identified.
More than 2.1 million winning tickets in the latest draw
Before this win, about 1.7 million winning tickets were issued in Friday's drawing. However, the rapidly growing jackpot attracted even more entries, and on Tuesday, the number of winning tickets increased to 2,109,736.
In addition to the top prize, four people matched five numbers, which earned them $1 million each. These lucky players purchased their tickets in California, New York, Florida, and Washington. Another 47 people matched four white balls and a gold Mega Ball, winning $10,000 each. Of these, 10 players used the Megaplier option, which increased their winnings to $40,000.
