The American sports community is seeing a growing problem related to online harassment of professional and college athletes. One such case was highlighted by Auburn Tigers senior quarterback Peyton Thorn, who shared his story of pressure from disgruntled bettors.
New Forms of Athlete Harassment
Speaking on The Next Round podcast, Thorn spoke about his experience with online harassment. He noted that he has repeatedly received messages from players who demanded that they return the money they lost in bets. Some even tracked his Venmo account and requested transfers.
Thorn humorously noted that he has never received money from fans, despite their requests to return their losses. He criticized such bettors, emphasizing that no one sends money to players when they win thanks to their successful play.
Despite such cases, the quarterback noted that he remains calm and does not allow such requests to bother him too much. However, he admitted that it is difficult to ignore bullying these days, as people have many ways to do so.
Harassment of athletes is a serious problem
The problem of harassment in the world of sports is becoming more and more relevant and creates additional stress for players. With the increasing popularity of sports betting, the number of cases of online aggression continues to grow. Now, in addition to social networks, bettors are starting to look for payment details of athletes and demand compensation for lost bets.
Professional golfer Max Khoma also expressed his dissatisfaction with this trend, emphasizing how exhausting it is for athletes.
In addition to financial threats, some players receive messages with threats of physical violence.
Leagues are looking for a solution
Sports leagues are recognizing the seriousness of the problem and are looking for ways to address it. Major League Baseball (MLB) Commissioner Rob Manfred recently indicated that the organization is considering taking a more proactive approach to combating harassment.
The stress and potential threats faced by athletes, especially college athletes, have already led to some states banning college sports betting. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is strongly supporting the measure, arguing that it will protect athletes and preserve the integrity of competition.
