Friday the 13th is associated with bad luck and warnings of trouble in different cultures. The day has even been immortalized in a famous American horror film series dedicated to the myths and superstitions associated with this date. However, not everyone believes in the misfortunes associated with Friday the 13th. On the contrary, some people have become owners of huge cash wins on this day.
An example of this are residents of the state of Michigan, who have won over $170 million in the lottery on Friday the 13th since 2008. On the eve of another "unlucky" Friday, Michigan Lottery officials recalled instances when luck favored players despite the popular belief about the unlucky date.
Four Big Wins on an "Unlucky" Day
Michigan Lottery Commissioner Suzanne Shkrali said that despite superstition, four players became Mega Millions jackpot winners on Friday the 13th. "The unpredictability and randomness of lottery games is what makes them exciting. We may see a fifth Mega Millions winner this Friday," she said.
"Michigan lottery players have proven time and time again that Friday the 13th is not necessarily an unlucky day, winning four big jackpots totaling more than $170 million," Shkrali added.
The odds of winning Mega Millions are 1 in 302,575,350, but that hasn't stopped four Michigan residents from becoming multi-million dollar winners.
The first such case occurred on June 13, 2008, when a Kent City resident won $57 million. Three years later, on May 13, 2011, a Kalamazoo man became the lucky winner of $27 million.
The next lucky break occurred on June 13, 2014, when a Port Huron woman won an impressive $66 million.
Finally, on October 13, 2017, a Waterford man became the fourth winner, taking home a jackpot of $21 million.
The last big Mega Millions win in Michigan was in January 2021, when a club of players in Oakland County won a staggering $1.05 billion — the largest jackpot in the state's history.
Will someone hit the jackpot again this Friday the 13th?
