Major League Soccer (MLS) has announced that it has terminated the contract of Sporting Kansas City midfielder Felipe Hernandez after he repeatedly violated the league's gambling rules. The 25-year-old, who had been on administrative leave since June 2024, violated the terms of his reinstatement in January 2022, when he was ordered to abstain from betting entirely.

A player's history with gambling

Hernandez's gambling problems began in 2021, when he disclosed his betting to the club. He was then suspended for the rest of the season for betting on two MLS matches, even though his club was not involved in the games. MLS conducted a thorough investigation and concluded that Hernandez did not use inside information or influence the outcome of the matches. This fact, as well as his voluntary admission, were mitigating circumstances, and the player was allowed to return to training in January 2022, on the condition that he completely abstain from gambling.

Despite the past, the new investigation by the league found a repeat violation of the rules. As a result, Hernandez's contract was terminated immediately. According to a statement from MLS, the player can apply for reinstatement to the league no earlier than January 1, 2026, but his fate will depend on the decision of the Commissioner's Office.

Gambling remains a risk to the sport

MLS confirmed the decision to terminate Hernandez's contract, stating that his recent actions did not affect the outcome of the league matches. The details of the new violation remain unknown, but the situation has already dealt a significant blow to the young footballer’s career.

With the legalization of sports betting in Kansas in 2022, interest in this type of entertainment has increased. However, as experts note, sports betting poses a serious risk for people prone to gambling. In such cases, it is recommended to participate in a voluntary self-exclusion program to avoid situations like Hernandez’s.

This situation highlights that no sport is immune to gambling-related problems. Hopefully, Hernandez’s story will serve as a warning to other MLS footballers. Despite the possibility of a return in 2026, his year-long absence from the field could seriously undermine his chances of successfully continuing his career.
