The members consider the win a blessing
The three-member club from Winfield has been participating in lotteries for years. Each member collects bottles and cans for recycling and uses the money to buy lottery tickets. Over the course of three decades, they have become regulars in various lotteries.
In May of this year, the club purchased tickets for the latest Mega Millions drawing. To their surprise, on May 17, they managed to match five white balls and win $1 million. The winning numbers were 8, 17, 40, 60, and 70.
Kenneth Baran, a representative of the club, shared his emotions in an interview with representatives of the Michigan Lottery: “We all consider this win a blessing. It still doesn’t quite sink in.”
Lottery Tickets with Recycling Money
One of the club members said they are all relatives who have been playing the lottery for over 30 years. “When we recycle bottles and cans, we put aside change and then use it to buy lottery tickets,” he explained.
This week, the club visited the Michigan Lottery office to collect their winnings. When asked what they planned to do with the money, the members said they planned to invest the money.
One of the club members recalled the day they found out about the win: “I forgot to check the ticket. When I saw that all the numbers matched except for the Mega Ball, I thought, ‘This is a mistake.’ I called my husband to look at it too, and when he confirmed that I was right, I immediately called the other member to tell her the news.”
Earlier this month, another lucky person in Texas managed to hit the mega Mega Millions jackpot — an incredible $800 million. It was the third major prize this year and the seventh largest in the game's history.
