Fantasy Life, a fantasy sports news and analytics aggregator, has signed current NFL player Nicholas Petit-Frere of the Tennessee Titans as its new fantasy football specialist.
NFL Player Becomes Fantasy Life’s DFS Expert
Petit-Frere’s hiring is controversial and could create more problems for his career. The player was previously suspended by the NFL during the 2023 regular season for engaging in betting in violation of league rules.
The league has worked hard to educate its players and employees on the importance of abiding by the prohibition on gambling, which is clearly spelled out in its rules. One of those rules explicitly prohibits players from participating in fantasy sports.
This is what makes Petit-Frere’s appointment particularly surprising, although it is not yet known whether his role was cleared with the NFL. Regardless, there are no clear indications that his new appointment could result in sanctions.
Petit-Frere has already appeared on the company’s live stream this week, commentating on football events. However, the player’s season has gotten off to a rocky start, and the Tennessee Titans may be concerned about his current form.
The NFL is committed to following the rules, not punishing without reason
As noted, Petit-Frere is likely not violating the league’s rules against gambling, since his role is to provide expert opinion, not to place bets. However, his new position could draw additional scrutiny from NFL officials who want to make sure their players are not engaging in behavior that could damage the league’s reputation.
The NFL has been quick to act this year, issuing a statement ahead of the 2024-25 season condemning any violations of its gambling rules for both players and league employees.
However, the league has been flexible, conducting educational campaigns. Isaiah Rogers, another player who was suspended for gambling, was reinstated in April of this year.
