In the last six months, Bahawalpur police have arrested 13,881 suspects and recovered stolen money and property worth over Rs 110 million (around $1.31 million). The list includes 2,705 people linked to criminal advertising, 365 fugitives and over 300 gamblers.
Effective measures to combat crime
According to District Police Chief (DPO) Asad Sarfraz Khan, the authorities are focusing on identifying people who are destabilizing the society and ensuring their punishment. The crime fighting strategy, which was formulated on the instructions of the Provincial Minister Punjab and Inspector General of Police Punjab, covers 12,582 cases of old and new offences, proving its effectiveness.
Bahawalpur police busted 17 gangs, including notorious criminals with the aliases Shahid, Ramzan Dashti, Sajjad and Mujahid.
312 gamblers arrested
The operations against gambling, which is illegal for citizens under the Prevention of Gambling Act, 1977, resulted in 50 cases being filed, leading to the arrest of 312 gamblers and the seizure of their equipment and large sums of money. It was also reported that the Peshawar High Court had recently barred the Pakistan Cricket Association from entering into gambling sponsorship deals.
Nearly 1,500 cases of arms and drugs
In addition, Bahawalpur police registered at least 522 cases related to arms trafficking. During these operations, 525 people were arrested and 12 rifles, 14 pistols, 24 shotguns, two Kalashnikovs, 31 carbines, 383 pistols, 53 revolvers and 1,550 rounds of ammunition were seized.
In addition, 952 cases of drug-related crimes were registered, which also resulted in the arrest of 952 suspects. The police seized over eight kilograms of hashish, six kilograms of methamphetamine, two kilograms of heroin, seven kilograms of opium, three kilograms of cannabis and 33,234 litres of alcohol. 81 functioning stills were also seized.
1,940 arrests under National Action Plan
Under the National Action Plan, formulated by the Pakistan government in December 2014 to combat terrorism, 1,940 suspects have been arrested and produced in court. Khan, who was previously the chief of telecommunications in Lahore, was appointed as DPO Bahawalpur in March. He called on the public and the media to support initiatives to identify those disturbing public order. The police chief stressed that joint community efforts and timely reporting can significantly reduce crime.
