The demolition of the iconic Tropicana Las Vegas hotel and casino is scheduled for October 9, 2024, marking the end of an iconic period and the beginning of a new era in Las Vegas. A state-of-the-art stadium for the Oakland Athletics baseball team will be built on the site, as well as a new entertainment resort from Bally's Corporation. This major change will dramatically affect the face of Las Vegas.

Tropicana Las Vegas to have an epic farewell with drones and fireworks

The demolition of the iconic hotel, which has been a symbol of the Las Vegas Strip since 1957, will be accompanied by a grand show. Grucci Fireworks will send more than 500 drones to light up the sky before a spectacular fireworks show, creating an unforgettable farewell to the Tropicana. Due to safety concerns, spectators will not be able to attend the demolition, but will be able to watch the process online through the Las Vegas Convention and Tourism Authority and Bally Live.

In a recent press release, Soo Kim, Chairman of Bally's Corporation, shared his memories of the Tropicana's history. He emphasized that the hotel was one of the first on the Las Vegas Strip and laid the foundation for the majestic shows for which the city has become famous.

"It is fitting that this iconic landmark now symbolizes the future of Las Vegas as we look forward to the arrival of Major League Baseball, the Athletics, and a new entertainment complex. This moment in Las Vegas history represents more than just a new chapter — it represents the evolution of the Strip, where legend meets innovation to create something truly unforgettable,” Kim said.

Tropicana Las Vegas to Make Way for Modern Entertainment Resort

Tropicana made a splash when it opened, with its lavish South Beach-inspired design that attracted celebrities and set new standards for the industry. For more than 60 years, it has been an icon of the ever-changing Las Vegas entertainment and gambling scene. Its demolition marks another step toward a new beginning for the Las Vegas Strip, as Bally’s Corporation plans to transform the 10 acres into a modern entertainment resort.

Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI), a company with extensive experience in demolishing large buildings in Clark County, will handle the demolition. 490 pounds of explosives will be used to demolish the steel Paradise Tower, while 1,700 pounds of explosives will be used to demolish the concrete Club Tower. Once started, the demolition process will take about 22 seconds, ending with both towers collapsing in spectacular fashion.

John Fisher, owner of the Oakland Athletics, noted that the demolition of the Tropicana is an important step toward bringing Major League Baseball to Las Vegas. They plan to build a new $1.5 billion, 30,000-seat stadium that should be ready for the 2028 season, opening a new chapter for baseball and entertainment in the city.
