In today’s world of sports betting, the pressure on bettors is constantly increasing. Even winning on the field does not protect professional athletes from disgruntled bettors.

Jackson: Team Wins Are More Important Than Individual Performance

Lamar Jackson, quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens, recently expressed his disappointment in a post on the X platform. He noted that many bettors care more about their bets than the actual victories of their teams. Jackson emphasized that this attitude is evident regardless of the outcome of the games.

On September 29, his team won a convincing 35-10 victory over the previously undefeated Buffalo Bills, showing a high level of play. Despite this, Jackson faced criticism for his personal statistics, even though the team won.

The quarterback only had 156 passing yards, which apparently did not satisfy the expectations of those who bet on his individual achievements. In his post, Jackson emphasized that American football is a team game, and individual performance is not so important if the team wins.

He later commented that for him, football has always been and remains a team game, where the main result is the team's victory, and not individual statistics. Jackson, who is the owner of two MVP awards, admitted that individual performance fades into the background when it comes to winning a game. The Baltimore Ravens, according to him, play to win, and not to satisfy the expectations of bettors.

The problem of athlete harassment

Harassment of athletes by disgruntled bettors has become a serious problem. Since the repeal of PASPA in 2018, legal sports betting has quickly spread across the United States, attracting millions of people. Unfortunately, many of these new entrants to the betting market have little interest in the sport itself and are more focused on their potential winnings.

The situation with the harassment of young athletes at the college level has become particularly alarming, prompting numerous calls to ban certain types of bets in order to protect young players from unnecessary stress and pressure.

The NCAA has been a vocal advocate for banning bets on individual performances of college athletes, arguing that it will help preserve the integrity of the sport and reduce the risks to young players.
