Sheffield-based charity Sheffield Voices won the Sky Bet Ebor Festival Community Lottery this year, raising £20,000 ($25,000) to support their cause.
Organized jointly by York Racecourse and Sky Bet, the lottery draw aims to recognize local charitable initiatives across Yorkshire for their positive impact on society.
Frankie Dettori took back-to-back victories at Sky Bet Ebor, this time leading Absurde to victory, giving Sheffield Voices the coveted £20,000 prize. Barnsley Hospice came in second and Streetangels York third with £5,000 and £2,000 respectively.
Sheffield Voices operates as the unit for Disability Sheffield, a self-advocacy group that empowers people to voice their concerns about issues that affect them.
The organization has become a hub for community engagement, initiating projects that foster meaningful connections and interactions. Over the past two years, they have introduced a number of creative self-advocacy initiatives such as dramaturgy, art/sculpture, and creative writing, all of which contribute to their new community messaging hubs known as We Talk, You Listen.
Katherine Littlewood, manager of Sheffield Voices said: “The £20,000 donation goes a long way in supporting our new self-advocacy project for young people, bringing them together and giving them a voice to change and live their lives. the way they want."
James Brennan, Head of Marketing and Sponsorship for York Racecourse, said: “It was great to see Frankie racing towards his second consecutive victory at Ebor, this time at Absurde. I am always honored to host representatives from the 22 shortlisted charities and we look forward to seeing the amazing work they are doing with the donations they have received.”
Michael Schinners, Horse Racing Betting Manager at Sky Betting & Gaming, added: "All of the charities shortlisted for this year's lottery are great projects and overall it has been a fantastic success."
