The Windy City has a new reason to cheer, as Bally's officially opened the doors of Chicago's first and only casino on September 9, 2023. Located in the heart of the River North area, this temporary casino is set to make a significant impact while paving the way for an even grander permanent establishment slated for 2026 in the city's River West district.
Securing the Gaming License
In a groundbreaking development, Marcus Fruchter, the Administrator of the Illinois Gaming Board, granted the gaming license for this three-story casino resort. Boasting over 800 slot machines, 56 table games, two fine dining restaurants, full-service bars, and a cozy coffee bar, the resort promises a world-class gaming and dining experience.
This temporary gaming haven is authorized to operate for up to three years, with projected tax revenues and contributions to the Chicago community estimated to reach a staggering $55 million.
Bally's proudly declared, "Bally's Chicago will redefine the entertainment landscape as the first and only casino in Chicago."
Successful Test Run
Leading up to the grand opening, the casino underwent a thorough test run. State regulators meticulously assessed the facility, including the functionality of slot machines and gaming tables, as well as catering, security measures, and more. The meticulous examination culminated in the issuance of the gaming license on September 8, 2023.
A Casino That Gives Back
Beyond its promise of luxury gaming, Bally's is also gearing up to give back to the community. The casino aims to swiftly pay the $135 million license fee to the Gaming Board, an amount due within 30 days. These funds will be channeled into state infrastructure projects, benefiting the broader community.
Moreover, the casino's presence is expected to provide a substantial boost to small businesses in the River North neighborhood. A nearby restaurant manager exclaimed, "We are one of the few restaurants right outside their doors, so it’s good for our business. It’s good for our staff. It’s a win all around."
Community Concerns
Not everyone is equally thrilled about the casino's arrival. SOAR, a neighboring organization, remains staunchly opposed to the project. They believe that gambling should not be relied upon as a primary fundraising resource for the city. Deborah Gershbein, the President of SOAR, voiced concerns about potential traffic issues and safety concerns linked to the roads connecting the casino to downtown Chicago.
Bally's has responded by assuring that they are well-prepared to address such concerns, with plans to employ around 500 individuals at the resort. Their responsibilities may include managing congestion and ensuring safety in the vicinity.
On opening day, CBS reported that the city and Chicago Police collaborated to facilitate traffic control, providing essential information and guidance to the eager visitors flocking to the Bally's Medinah Temple casino. The casino is set to operate seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 4 a.m., offering non-stop excitement to all who venture through its doors.
