Sweden is taking significant steps to strengthen its gambling regulator, Spelinspektionen, in the fight against the unlicensed gambling market. In the 2024 budget, the Swedish government has proposed an additional SEK10.8 million (€906,000) to support Spelinspektionen's efforts. This financial injection is set to increase to SEK15.6 million in 2025 and SEK18.6 million in 2026.
The government's decision reflects its commitment to consumer protection within the gambling sector. Niklas Wykman, the Financial Markets minister, emphasized the importance of strong consumer protection, stating, "With this investment, Spelinspektionen can enhance supervision." He also highlighted the collaborative aspect of the funding, suggesting that working closely with Sweden's Financial Supervisory Authority could help prevent illegal financial transactions, thereby contributing to the fight against criminal activity.
Jakob Forssmed, the Sports minister, noted that reinforcing Spelinspektionen's work is crucial for safeguarding Swedish sports against the influence of organized crime. The additional funds are expected to boost the regulator's capabilities in supervising the gambling industry effectively.
This latest funding follows a spring budget amendment in April, when Spelinspektionen received an extra SEK2.4 million (€210,000). Camilla Rosenberg, the director general of Spelinspektionen, explained that these funds were used to increase personnel and enhance supervisory and information-gathering efforts. The regulator has been managing new igaming supplier licenses while continuing its core supervisory responsibilities.
The Swedish government's commitment to funding Spelinspektionen demonstrates its dedication to maintaining a fair and regulated gambling market for consumers and operators alike.
