Amid the growth and expansion of legal sports betting in the United States, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has announced its intention to support changes to betting laws in an effort to ensure the integrity of its competitions. In addition to promoting integrity, these proposals aim to raise awareness of gambling problems and protect student-athletes from coercion and harassment.

The NCAA acknowledged that 38 states currently have laws legalizing sports betting. However, it said that while some states offer complex rules to protect athletes, others do not. That's why the Association surveyed student-athletes in an effort to improve the rules and develop a model it could offer to various states. The changes are intended to protect student-athletes, officials, coaches and other athletic personnel by protecting them from betting-related harassment, problem gambling or integrity-related abuses.

Ultimately, the NCAA said it plans to work with lawmakers to implement changes in different states. He supports "mandatory reporting hotlines for gambling authorities so they can report such behavior to law enforcement," as well as increased penalties for gamblers who harass student-athletes. In addition, the Association proposes mandatory training for gambling operators to enable them to identify harassment.

Further changes to be proposed include strengthening measures against underage sports betting. Additionally, the NCAA proposal would include detailed information about a harassment hotline and problem gambling information in any sports betting advertising. Last but not least, it states that revenue generated from betting should be used to educate high-risk students.

Changes to Protect and Educate Student-Athletes
Morgin Wynne, vice chair of the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, said the well-being and health of student-athletes is of paramount importance at this time. She added, “With the legalization of sports betting, it is critical that we take a proactive approach to protecting student-athletes from potential negative interactions with gamblers.” Finally, Wynn supported legislative changes that aim to prioritize the protection of student-athletes and protect them from harmful acts.

"The NCAA is making changes to help student-athletes make smart choices when it comes to sports betting, but given the explosive growth of this new industry, we are committed to working with legislators, regulators and industry leaders to protect student-athletes from harassment . and threats." Charlie Baker, NCAA President

Charlie Baker, president of the NCAA, said the association works with student-athletes to ensure they make smart choices when it comes to betting. However, he added that the NCAA is interested in working with regulators and legislators to ensure student-athletes are protected. Baker discussed betting legislation in different states, saying some offer protections, but others need to do more.
