The National Lottery Heritage Fund helps distribute UK National Lottery funding, supporting various heritage processes across the country. The Heritage Trust announced on Sunday that it will provide vital support to 20 long-term projects as part of its new Heritage Places initiative. Overall, around £200 million ($243.6 million) is expected to go towards transforming landscapes, towns and cities between now and 2033.

The first nine locations to benefit from the funding include Glasgow, County Durham, Leicester, Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Neath Port Talbot, Medway, North East Lincolnshire, Torbay and Stoke-on-Trent. According to the Heritage Trust, 11 more sites are expected to be announced as part of the upcoming three-year development plan.

The Heritage Places initiative is part of the ambitious Heritage 2033 strategy, which was unveiled back in March this year. According to the Heritage Foundation, the initiative "is part of our long-term vision to ensure that heritage is valued, cared for and maintained for everyone, now and in the future."

To identify the places that will receive vital funding, the Heritage Places Initiative used an evidence-based approach. In addition, the initiative used “new, locally tailored quantitative research” to help identify places that could benefit from heritage funding.

"We are forging long-term partnerships with cities and towns across the UK as part of a 10-year journey to help places thrive by unlocking the potential of their heritage," reveals a statement released by the National Lottery Heritage Fund

Heritage preservation is important
Torbay is among the announced places that will benefit from the new Heritage Places initiative. Martin Thomas, chief executive of Torbay Culture, praised the importance of this strategic collaboration. He explained that by working with the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the region would be supporting its local heritage.

"Over the last 30 years, the Heritage Fund has invested in heritage, creating better places to live, work and visit local communities." Eilish McGuinness, Chief Executive of the National Lottery Heritage Fund

Eilis McGuinness, chief executive of the Heritage Trust, added that over the past three decades the fund has helped invest in the heritage of various regions across the country. “Our heritage places build on this and are designed to support us through challenging times, achieve even greater impact and ensure our funding is in place for the long term,” she added. Finally, McGuinness spoke about the important role of preserving culture, history and architecture for communities.
