The Serie A football scandal has taken another twist as Roma's Nicola Zalewski becomes the latest player to be implicated in an ongoing betting probe. This investigation has already ensnared several Serie A footballers, raising concerns about illegal wagering.
Serie A Rules on Sports Betting
Serie A athletes are permitted to engage in sports betting, but there are clear rules. They are not allowed to bet on their own sport, and the betting websites they use must be legal.
The Start of the Investigation
The investigation began with Nicolò Fagioli, an Italian football player who represents both Juventus and the Italian national team. Reports suggest that Fagioli may have violated federal laws by betting on illegal platforms. If found guilty, he could face a minimum fine of €25,000 ($26,507) and a three-year ban from the sport.
However, Fagioli is not the sole footballer under scrutiny. Italian footballers Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo are also being investigated by the Turin Public Prosecutor's Office.
Consequences for the Accused Players
As a result of the investigations, both Tonali and Zaniolo have been dropped from the Italian national squad. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) released a statement, explaining that these players are not in the right condition to participate in upcoming matches.
