Massachusetts is making headlines in the world of sports betting, thanks to a remarkable increase in online wagers. In September, the state's sports betting activity soared to new heights, with a total handle of $512.2 million, a remarkable 62.7% increase from August. This surge in online sports betting has firmly established Massachusetts as a significant player in the sports wagering industry.
Online sports betting, which accounted for the lion's share of the total wagers at $499.7 million, has continued to gain momentum since the launch of legal online wagering in March. Retail sportsbooks also contributed with $12.4 million in wagers.
The revenue generated from sports betting in September is equally impressive, with operators raking in a total of $49.8 million. This figure represents a staggering 119.4% increase from the previous month, with $49.0 million stemming from online betting and $783,017 coming from retail wagering. This achievement is only surpassed by May's record of $59.4 million in revenue.
DraftKings is undoubtedly the front-runner among the operators, pulling in a remarkable $28.2 million in revenue from a record $290.1 million in bets, setting a new high for a single operator in Massachusetts. FanDuel comes in second, boasting $14.2 million in revenue from a handle of $121.9 million, while BetMGM secures the third spot with $3.7 million in revenue from $33.5 million in online bets.
The retail segment has also seen movement, with MGM Springfield leading the way, amassing $289,320 in revenue from a handle of $1.6 million. Plainridge Park Casino may have taken more retail bets at $4.6 million, but it recorded slightly lower revenue of $282,699. Interestingly, Encore Boston Harbor processed the most wagers at $6.2 million but had the lowest revenue at $242,313.
In contrast, the land-based casino sector in Massachusetts faced a decline. Table and slot gross gaming revenue decreased by 7.7% from August, amounting to $90.4 million. Physical slots contributed $62.9 million to this figure, while table games brought in $27.5 million.
When combining sports wagering and casino revenue, Massachusetts saw a 16.3% increase in earnings from the previous month, bringing in $140.2 million. The state also collected $9.9 million in sports betting tax and $25.7 million in land-based casino tax. Massachusetts' rapidly growing sports betting market continues to make waves, setting the stage for even more exciting developments in the months to come.
