Blå Kors, a renowned organization specializing in the treatment of money and computer game addiction, has been entrusted with the responsibility of managing the Norwegian Gambling Addiction Helpline, an initiative by the Norwegian Lottery Authority. This transition marks a pivotal moment in addressing the rising concerns of gambling addiction in Norway.
Sykehuset Innlandet, the previous operator of the helpline, had earlier announced its intention to discontinue this service, leading to the selection of Blå Kors as the replacement. Blå Kors, which currently runs treatment services for various addictions in three cities, will expand its services to encompass gambling addiction under the banner of "Blue Cross Gambling Addiction." This expansion includes not only the helpline but also remote-based treatment options for individuals struggling with gambling addiction.
The helpline, which is expected to continue its operation from the town of Hamar, will retain its existing staff. This continuity ensures that individuals seeking assistance for gambling addiction will have a reliable resource to turn to.
Trine Stensen, the secretary-general of Blå Kors, emphasized their commitment to addressing addiction issues, including gambling addiction. "Blue Cross has extensive experience in treating various addiction problems, including gambling addiction, and we want to expand our work in this area," she stated.
The Norwegian Lottery Authority reports that approximately 23,000 Norwegians grapple with gambling problems. In 2022, the helpline received 825 calls, marking an increase from the previous year. Lars Petter Degnepoll of the Norwegian Lottery Authority emphasized the importance of the helpline, saying, "The helpline is an important low-threshold offer for players and their relatives. It can be the start of getting out of the problem. Blue Cross has worked with gambling problems for a long time and is well-equipped to take over the helpline."
