Progress Remains Steady

The North Carolina government's pursuit of legalized sports betting encountered a setback as the targeted 8 January launch date is no longer achievable. The North Carolina Lottery Commission, tasked with implementing the sports betting program, clarified that several essential steps must be completed before betting can commence. The delay is attributed to the meticulous approach required to ensure customer safety and operator accountability.

Implementing Crucial Measures

The Commission plans to adopt initial sports betting rules and a wagering catalog this week. However, further steps are necessary, including approving additional regulations following public input, conducting background checks on applicants, establishing internal controls, and ensuring responsible gaming measures. Until these processes are completed, a 'go live' date for sports betting remains uncertain.

Van Denton, the North Carolina Lottery director of communications, emphasized the importance of these steps in the overall launch process.

Mid-2024 Target for Mobile Betting

While the delay may disappoint some, the Commission's original target for launching mobile sports betting was mid-2024. The state modeled its regulatory framework after Massachusetts, appointing Sterl Carpenter, an ex-senior regulator, as the head of gaming compliance and sports betting. Despite the setback, the commission remains committed to achieving a successful launch ahead of the 15 June deadline.

Expanding Gambling Options

North Carolina's sports betting legislation allows in-venue sportsbooks at four professional stadiums and temporary sportsbooks during specific events. Although these measures are relatively conservative compared to other states, the launch of sports betting in the Tar Heel State is eagerly anticipated. The state is also poised to become a prominent US gambling destination, planning a casino expansion by legalizing four new venues through the state budget.

While the delay may disappoint some, the North Carolina Lottery Commission emphasizes the importance of a careful and appropriate launch, aligning with regulatory guidelines to avoid potential issues associated with rushing such a contentious measure.
