Facing Opposition:
Introduced on October 27, 2023, the Sports Wagering Regulation and Tribal Gaming Protection Act aimed to open up the largest sports betting market in the United States. However, formal opposition swiftly arose from the CNIGA, representing tribal groups in California. A total of 52 members voted against two sports betting proposals, emphasizing the need for Tribal consultation in legalizing sports wagering.
CNIGA's Critique:
James Siva, CNIGA’s chairman, strongly criticized the sports wagering proposals, stating that the entire effort was handled poorly by the initiative sponsors. He highlighted concerns about outside influences attempting to divide and conquer Indian tribes, expressing irrevocable opposition to the initiatives.
Call to Drop Initiatives:
Siva urged the proponents of the proposals to drop them, citing their promise to do so in the face of tribal opposition. He emphasized that Tribal leaders, with over 40 years of experience in the gaming sector, are dedicated to ensuring the well-being of their communities.
