Concerted Efforts Deliver Positive Outcomes
Expanding its scope to include 17-year-olds and pupils from independent schools, the survey engaged 3,453 online participants across England, Scotland, and Wales. While overall results align with the previous year, a notable 5% decrease in gambling participation suggests the efficacy of existing preventive measures, particularly in regulated gambling.
Decrease in Exposure to Advertisements
The report indicates a 10% reduction in exposure to gambling advertisements among 11-17-year-olds, both online and offline. However, 15% of participants still follow gambling companies on social media platforms, with YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram being the primary channels.
Updated Legislation for Sustained Progress
Approximately 26% of individuals aged 11 to 17 actively gambled in the past year, with arcade gaming machines being the most popular activity at 19%. Online gambling participation remained consistent, with 1% spending money on esports betting or iGaming. Specific percentages for problem gambling reveal 0.7% as problem gamblers, 1.5% at risk, and 23% as non-problem gamblers.
Industry Response and Future Measures
The UKGC and BGC's vigilance has contributed to the observed decreases in gambling rates. Industry stakeholders are urged to consider the report, understanding the reasons behind gambling behaviors. The upcoming White Paper is anticipated to introduce additional youth protection measures, setting a new standard for youth protection across the UK.
