The Responsible Play Partnership Initiative:
The Responsible Play Partnership, a collaboration between the NYS Gaming Commission, the New York Council on Problem Gambling, and the State Office of Addiction Services and Support, advocates for voluntary self-exclusion as an effective measure against problem gambling. This forward-thinking program allows local players to exclude themselves from gambling activities within the state.

How it Works:
Local players can opt for self-exclusion by submitting a form via mail or at a gambling establishment. Operators catering to excluded players face substantial fines. The program now includes a complimentary support system to help individuals recognize and address problem gambling. Staff from the NY Council on Problem Gambling are stationed at gambling facilities statewide to provide information and assistance. Online services facilitate remote form submission.

Prevention Is Key:
James Maney, the council’s executive director, emphasizes the importance of assisting those in need. He believes the program will "break down barriers" for New York gamblers. Chinazo Cunningham, a commissioner at the State Office of Addiction Services and Support, underscores the efficacy of voluntary self-exclusion as a prevention strategy. It also serves as an avenue to connect individuals with local problem gambling community support services.

Alarming Statistics:
A study by the office suggests that approximately 4.4% of New York’s adult population is at risk of problem gambling, with 0.7% already experiencing harm. The recent introduction of online sports betting and the upcoming opening of three new casinos heighten the need for effective prevention measures. Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing about the Adams Administration’s casino zoning plan, potentially leading to widespread casino developments in New York City.
