High Anticipation for North Carolina's Mobile Sports Betting Delay

North Carolina’s sports betting law originally set January 8, 2024, as the online sports betting launch date. Despite regulatory preparations progressing steadily, recent updates from the NCSLC suggest that the anticipated launch around the Super Bowl is unfeasible. Regulatory proposals were published on November 7 and approved on November 16, raising hopes, but Rand's update clarified the uncertainty.

Rand's statement highlighted the state's cautious approach, emphasizing that a problematic launch could be more damaging than delaying the release. The authorities acknowledge the potential revenue loss from missing out on the Super Bowl but prioritize a well-executed launch.

Despite authorities confirming a mid-2024 timeline in November, fan anticipation remains high. The NCSLC prefers to take its time to ensure the legalization of online wagering is comprehensive and error-free, tempering the ebullient hopes that emerged with the seemingly rapid progress.

North Carolina remains an attractive prospect for operators, with big names like DraftKings, Caesars, bet365, BetMGM, and FanDuel gearing up to enter the market. Physical sports wagering is currently available at three sportsbooks on tribal land, but the 2023 sports betting law opens the door for 12 online operators.

The NCSLC is now accepting sports wagering applications, and operators must apply for one of the 12 state-allocated licenses by December 27. The Commission will review candidates within 60 days, signaling that a launch won’t happen before March. Successful applicants face a $1 million licensing fee and an 18% tax on revenues.

Despite the disappointment of missing the Super Bowl window, the NCSLC Sports Betting Committee remains committed to ensuring a successful launch within the regulatory guidelines. North Carolina is poised to become a prosperous and sustainable online wagering jurisdiction.
