Georgia Senator Plans Push for Legalized Gambling in 2024

Senator Brandon Beach is taking the lead in advocating for a significant shift in Georgia's stance on gambling. During a recent meeting of the Joint Committees on Economic Development and Tourism, Senator Beach announced his plans to introduce legislation in the upcoming legislative session. The proposed legislation would allow locals to vote on a constitutional amendment, opening the doors to casino gaming, sports betting, and pari-mutuel wagering.

Senator Beach believes that legalizing gambling could result in a substantial economic boost for Georgia, estimating up to $900 million in annual tax revenue. This revenue, he argues, could be instrumental in supporting state infrastructure, healthcare initiatives, education, and gambling addiction treatment.

Contrary to creating a Las Vegas-style destination, Senator Beach envisions the establishment of casino resorts that would attract tourists and generate employment opportunities. The ripple effect on the economy would extend beyond gambling, fostering growth in sectors such as retail and hospitality.

Highlighting the lack of nighttime activities in Atlanta, Senator Beach sees the potential for casino resorts to transform the city's entertainment landscape. Beyond gaming, these resorts would contribute to the diversification of entertainment options, addressing a current void in the city's offerings.

Under the proposed legislation, a new commission under the Georgia Lottery Corporation would oversee and regulate gambling activities in the state. Senator Beach plans to present the legislation on the first day of the 2024 legislative session, emphasizing that Georgia is currently missing out on significant revenue compared to other states with legalized betting.
