MGA's Productive First Half

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has made waves in the gaming world with the release of its Interim Performance Report for the first half of 2023. This report, which evaluates the MGA's accomplishments and the overall performance of Malta's gaming sector, was published on December 19th, 2023.

Regulatory Oversight and Penalties

During the first six months of 2023, the MGA conducted 14 compliance audits and reviewed 85 desktop operations. Notably, nine administrative penalties were imposed, totaling €124,400. These penalties serve as a stern reminder of the MGA's commitment to upholding industry standards.

Financial Intelligence Oversight

In addition to its regulatory responsibilities, the MGA carried out 11 Compliance Examinations on behalf of the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit (FIAU). During this period, FIAU levied administrative penalties on three licensees for past violations, amounting to €599,420.

Player Assistance and Responsible Gambling

Demonstrating its dedication to player welfare, the MGA provided assistance to 2,216 players in need. It also conducted 40 checks on responsible gambling websites and issued 16 observation letters, highlighting areas for potential improvement.

Licensing and Rejections

Out of the 16 applications received for gaming licenses, the MGA granted seven, while eight were either rejected or withdrawn. The rigorous evaluation process ensures only the most qualified operators receive licenses.

International Collaboration

The MGA's influence extends beyond Malta's shores, as it cooperated with other regulatory authorities, facilitating data exchanges and addressing 166 allegations of suspicious activity. The MGA's commitment to international collaboration is evident through its 23 requests for cooperation and 53 official replies issued during the first half of 2023.

Support from Local Authorities

The MGA also worked closely with local authorities, responding to 45 requests for information from other governing bodies within Malta.

Gaming Industry's Economic Impact

The report highlighted the positive influence of the gaming industry on Malta's economy. In H1 2023, the gaming industry contributed €810.7 million to the Maltese economy, constituting approximately 9.5% of the Gross Value Added (GVA). When considering indirect effects, this figure rises to an impressive 12.2%. The steady growth of the gaming industry, with a 1.1% increase in GVA over H1 2022, underscores its vital role in Malta's economic landscape.

New CEO on the Horizon

In the midst of these revelations, the MGA announced Charles Mizzi as its incoming CEO, set to assume office on January 26. Mizzi takes the reins from Charles Brincat, who served as CEO for two years. One of Mizzi's initial challenges may involve defending Malta's Bill 55 against European opposition. This bill shields Malta-licensed operators from legal liability, a matter that has sparked controversy among European stakeholders. The resolution of this issue is likely to be one of Mizzi's top priorities as he takes on his new role.

Stay tuned for further developments as the MGA continues to shape the gaming landscape in Malta and beyond.
