Comstock Doubles Down on Fairfax County Casino Push with Lobbyists
Comstock Holding Companies Inc., a prominent developer, is determined to secure the opportunity to construct a casino near the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station in Virginia. The company's strategy includes hiring six lobbyists who will advocate for its cause during the upcoming Virginia General Assembly session, set to begin on January 10, 2024.
Communicating Readiness to Build a Project If and When
In addition to securing lobbying support, Comstock Holding Companies Inc. has made substantial political donations exceeding $500,000 to various political candidates. These donations are aimed at garnering legislative support and paving the way for the construction of a new casino.
Amid the intensifying competition for the right to build a casino in Fairfax County, Comstock Holding Companies Inc. remains determined to succeed, undeterred by the challenges it faces.
All lobbyists retained by Comstock will exclusively focus on safeguarding the company's interests during the forthcoming legislative session. Notably, Comstock contributed $244,500 to the Building a Remarkable Virginia Political Action Committee.
The media also highlighted that 14 Comstock employees collectively donated $29,525 to Del. Wren Williams's political campaign, with Williams introducing a bill that could potentially allow the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to propose a casino referendum in the future. However, it's worth noting that Williams had been working on this bill prior to receiving the donations.
Donations and a Long Process That Ultimately Lies with Voters
Another significant donation was made to Dave Marsden, who was also working on a bill aimed at bringing a casino project to fruition. While these donations may not raise red flags, they demonstrate Comstock Holding Companies Inc.'s determination to see its casino plans through in the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station area or its vicinity.
However, the ultimate decision rests with the voters, as the proposed bills would grant the public the right to decide whether they want a casino in their area. Comstock has already unveiled detailed plans for a casino in Reston in September 2023, but the final push awaits, both on the legislative front and at the ballots.
Comstock's donations and lobbying efforts are aimed at influencing the direction of the decision-making process in line with the company's business interests. Nevertheless, the fate of a casino property in the area will ultimately be determined by Fairfax County residents. Plans for casino openings are already in progress in Bristol, Portsmouth, and Danville, with discussions ongoing for potential developments in Norfolk and Richmond.
