Skill Games Win Legal Recognition
Skill games have been on the rise in Pennsylvania, sparking a debate over their regulation and taxation. A significant turning point came last month when the Commonwealth Court recognized the legality of wins from skill games, setting the stage for their regulation.
Restaurants, bars, and other businesses offering skill games have enjoyed increased revenue, while brick-and-mortar casinos have voiced concerns about their impact. However, casino revenues have continued to rise, thanks to sports wagering and online gambling.
Pace-O-Matic Advocates for Small Businesses
Mike Barley, chief of public relations at Pace-O-Matic, commended the success of Pennsylvania casinos, including Parx Casino, while criticizing their stance on skill games. Barley argued that it's time for casino operators to change their perspective and support small businesses operating skill games.
Barley stated, "Maybe, this time, the big guys can allow the little guys a small victory, especially one that is allowing them to hang on during difficult economic times."
The Need for Skill Game Regulations
The recent court decision marked a significant victory for skill games, but supporters are pushing for comprehensive regulations. Senator Gene Yaw has proposed a bill to tax and regulate skill games, potentially generating $300 million for the state in the first year.
Despite these efforts, casino operators continue to oppose regulations. Barley accused them of obstructing regulation and urged lawmakers to take action.
As the debate continues, the fate of skill games in Pennsylvania remains uncertain, with small businesses hoping for a fair and sensible resolution.
