In a groundbreaking development, Finland's national gambling monopoly, Veikkaus, has implemented new identification requirements for all of its games, both digital and land-based. This bold move solidifies Veikkaus as the pioneer in responsible gambling practices worldwide.
Veikkaus has decided to verify the identities of all players as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure a safer and more responsible gambling environment. The primary objective is to prevent individuals with gambling problems or those underage from participating in their games.
The new identification system mirrors the protocols already in place for coupon games like Eurojackpot and Lotto. Players can easily confirm their identities using a Veikkaus Card, a Kela card, or a digital Veikkaus card.
According to Susanna Saikkonen, Veikkaus' responsibility director, this identification system offers players the added benefit of monitoring their playing time and spending while setting annual loss limits. It also enhances the efficiency of Veikkaus' exclusion program.
Ville Venojärvi, Veikkaus' head of lottery games, expressed his support for this initiative, highlighting that coupon game players are already familiar with the process. Importantly, those who have purchased lottery tickets during the holiday season will still be able to redeem them without undergoing identification.
Besides this significant development, Veikkaus is preparing for upcoming reforms in Finnish gambling regulations that may end its monopoly. The state-owned company, while not firmly opposing these changes, has warned that it might have to undergo substantial internal restructuring, potentially leading to job losses for hundreds of its employees.
