Lithuania's Bid to Raise the Gambling Age
Lithuania's parliament, Seimas, has introduced a new proposal aimed at increasing the legal age for gambling to 21. This move is part of the country's 2024 legislative agenda and is set to be voted on by ministers later in the year. If approved, the new age limit will apply to both traditional and online gambling activities.
Stricter Restrictions and ID Requirements
In addition to raising the age limit, Lithuanian lawmakers are also considering implementing stricter regulations and identification requirements within the gambling industry. Under the proposed rules, individuals under the age of 21 will be prohibited from entering gambling establishments, placing bets, and participating in online gambling.
Origin of the Proposal
The proposal to raise the gambling age was put forth by Jurgita Sejonienė, a member of Lithuania's Homeland Union Party. Sejonienė argues that this change is necessary to align with Lithuania's ongoing efforts to tighten its gambling laws and regulations. The proposal has already received unanimous initial approval and is set to be further discussed by Seimas, with a final decision expected by July 2024.
Exception for the National Lottery
It's worth noting that the legal age for participating in the national lottery will remain 18+. However, Lithuania has recently imposed stricter ID verification requirements for lottery retailers to ensure that participants are of legal age. These changes reflect the country's commitment to establishing a more stringent regulatory framework within its gambling industry.
Recent Developments in Lithuanian Gambling Regulation
In addition to raising the gambling age, Lithuania has increased gambling licensing fees, signaling its dedication to tighter regulations. Effective since July 27, 2023, these changes are aimed at maintaining a more controlled and responsible gambling environment.
As part of these efforts, TopSport, an operator, faced penalties for violating self-exclusion rules by allowing an excluded individual to participate in gambling activities, resulting in a fine of $27,000. Lithuania's pursuit of stricter gambling regulations continues to shape the future of its gambling industry.
