IGT Ends Legal Battle

International Game Technology (IGT) has officially withdrawn its legal challenge against the decision to grant the fourth UK National Lottery licence to Allwyn. This decision comes after a series of legal proceedings and appeals that have lasted for nearly two years.

Background of the Dispute

The dispute began in July 2022 when the Court of Appeal allowed IGT to challenge the selection of Allwyn as the National Lottery licence holder. The Gambling Commission had originally announced Allwyn as the successful bidder in March 2022. In July 2023, the Court ruled that IGT did not have legal standing for a damages claim against the Commission. IGT appealed this decision in September but has now requested the Court to dismiss the appeal.

Commission's Response

The Gambling Commission maintains that it conducted a fair and lawful competition and evaluation process. Their focus is on implementing the decision for the benefit of participants and good causes, with the new licence set to be granted on 1 February 2024.

Camelot's Involvement

Camelot Group, the long-time operator of the National Lottery, also challenged the decision to award the licence to Allwyn. However, Camelot abandoned its legal challenge in September 2022, leading to a more amicable resolution between the two companies.

Allwyn's Acquisitions and Success

Allwyn, which secured the National Lottery licence, has since acquired Camelot UK and Camelot Lottery Solutions. These acquisitions have significantly boosted Allwyn's revenue, with a 98% increase reported in Q3 2023. The UK market now plays a central role in Allwyn's operations, with substantial revenue generated in the country.

This resolution brings an end to a protracted legal battle and paves the way for Allwyn to take over the National Lottery operations, bringing innovation and growth to the iconic British institution.
