In a significant development, the Macau Horse Racing Company has officially announced the cessation of horse racing operations, marking the end of an era for the Macau Jockey Club, a historic institution in the world of horse racing. This decision comes as the company faced mounting challenges and financial losses, leading to a request submitted to the government to terminate its concession for exclusive horse racing operations.
The Macau Horse Racing Company, in a statement, cited losses exceeding MOP2.5 billion and limited opportunities for industry growth in Macau, further exacerbated by the impact of the ongoing pandemic. Consequently, the company made the tough call to cease all racing-related activities starting from April 1, 2024.
As part of the termination agreement, the company has committed to addressing the rights and benefits of affected employees, ensuring their fair treatment during this transition. Additionally, they will facilitate the relocation of horses to approved locations by March 31, 2025.
This decision marks the end of an extended concession agreement that was signed in 2018, originally set to run until August 31, 2045. The Macau Jockey Club's financial struggles date back to 1989, with a significant restructuring undertaken in 1991 to allow it to continue its operations. Now, the curtain falls on horse racing in Macau, marking a new chapter for the local gaming and entertainment landscape.
