Oregon's December Sports Betting Triumph
As sports betting gains momentum across the United States, it's no surprise that Oregon is joining the ranks of states breaking records. The state, home to DraftKings as the sole legal sports betting operator, achieved a remarkable feat in December by recording a staggering $73.2 million in sports wagers. This new milestone outpaced the previous record set in October of the previous year, when $71.9 million was wagered. Notably, December's figure marked a 38.1% increase compared to December 2022's $53.8 million in wagers.
American Football Reigns Supreme
The sport that stole the show in December was American football, accounting for nearly a third of the total wagers. Oregon's football enthusiasts placed bets amounting to $23.1 million during the month. Following closely behind was basketball, with $16.5 million in wagers, followed by soccer and ice hockey, which attracted $3.3 million and $2 million in wagers, respectively.
Single Bets Dominate
Single bets continued to be the preferred choice among bettors, attracting a massive $48.1 million in wagers. Parlay bets, however, contributed significantly to the total handle with $25.1 million.
DraftKings Shines
DraftKings, the exclusive legal sports betting provider in Oregon, also experienced a historic month, posting a record revenue of $9.7 million. This represents a remarkable 70.2% year-on-year increase and a 14.1% increase from October's previous record of $8.5 million.
Revenue Breakdown
Breaking down the revenue by sport, football took the lead with $3.5 million, followed by basketball with $2.9 million, and football at approximately $606,000. Surprisingly, parlay bets outperformed single wagers in revenue, generating $5.7 million, while singles brought in $4 million.
Oregon and DraftKings expanded their offerings last year, allowing fans to bet on various unconventional disciplines, including the Tour de France, Major League Baseball's Home Run Derby, the American Cornhole League World Championship, and the famous Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest.
