Mississippi's Betting Market Takes a Hit
The Mississippi sports betting market faced a challenging December, as both handle and revenue showed substantial year-on-year declines. According to recent data, the Magnolia State reported a 34.3% drop in handle, with just $48.9 million in wagers compared to $74.4 million in December 2022. This decline was also evident when compared to November 2023, with a 21.6% decrease from $62.4 million.
Revenue Falls, but Not All Is Lost
In terms of revenue, Mississippi saw a significant decrease, reaching only $4.9 million in December. This marked a sharp 56.6% decline from the previous year's $11.3 million. However, there is a silver lining as the December revenue was a substantial 58.1% increase from November's $3.1 million haul.
Coastal Casinos Remain Preferred Destinations
When it comes to where Mississippi players chose to place their bets in December, coastal casinos continued to be the preferred venues. These casinos processed $31.6 million in bets and generated $2.4 million in revenue during the month. Notably, $14.5 million of wagers were placed on American football, $7.7 million on basketball, and $4.9 million on parlay bets.
Central casinos in the state took $11.0 million in wagers, reporting $1.7 million in sports betting revenue. Basketball accounted for $3.6 million of bets, with American football at $2.6 million and parlay cards at $4.7 million.
Lastly, northern casinos in Mississippi recorded $6.3 million in sports betting wagers, with revenue reaching $770,498. American football bets amounted to $2.9 million, basketball to $1.8 million, and parlay cards to $1.5 million.
The Mississippi sports betting market's December performance highlights both challenges and opportunities in the state's gambling industry, as it seeks to rebound in the coming months.
