Record-Breaking December Betting Handle
During December 2023, the state of Oregon experienced a sports betting frenzy, with players collectively wagering a staggering $73.2 million. This remarkable figure not only surpassed the previous record of $71.9 million, set just two months prior in October 2023 but also marked a significant 38.1% increase compared to December 2022, when $53.8 million was wagered.
American Football Reigns Supreme
Among the various sports attracting bets, American football emerged as the undeniable favorite, drawing in a whopping $23.1 million in wagers. Basketball closely followed with $16.5 million, while football and ice hockey secured $3.3 million and $2.0 million, respectively.
Bet Types and Revenue Milestones
Out of the total wagers placed, $48.1 million were single bets, while $25.1 million were parlay wagers. These wagers contributed to a record-breaking revenue of $9.7 million for December, surpassing the previous high of $8.5 million set in October 2023 by a notable 14.1%. Furthermore, this revenue figure witnessed a remarkable 70.2% increase compared to December 2022, which stood at $5.7 million.
DraftKings Dominates Oregon
It's worth noting that all sports betting activities in Oregon are exclusively conducted through DraftKings, the state's sole sports betting operator. DraftKings took over the Oregon Lottery's Scoreboard online sportsbook in January 2022, becoming the only legal platform for placing bets in the state. This transition was made possible following DraftKings' acquisition of SBTech in December 2019, a move unanimously approved by the Oregon Lottery Commission in August 2021.
The Oregon Lottery introduced the Scoreboard platform in October 2019, coinciding with the state's entry into the legal sports betting market. Since then, DraftKings has remained the go-to destination for Oregonians looking to engage in legal sports betting activities.
