Appointment Sparks Controversy
New York Governor Kathy Hochul's recent appointment of Marissa Shorenstein to the New York Gaming Commission has stirred controversy. Marissa Shorenstein, whose father is the prominent gambling lobbyist Stuart Shorenstein, has raised eyebrows among gaming industry watchdogs due to her family's connections.
Questions Surrounding the Appointment
Stuart Shorenstein's ties to various gaming firms, including Evolution Malta, an advocate for online betting legalization in New York, have raised questions about Marissa Shorenstein's appointment. Critics argue that this decision may lead to conflicts of interest within the regulatory body overseeing the gaming industry.
Concerns Raised by Watchdogs
Government accountability group Reinvent Albany's executive director, John Kaehny, expressed astonishment at the appointment, deeming it "absurd." Watchdogs emphasize the importance of impartiality and transparency in regulatory bodies, fearing that Shorenstein's position may be influenced by her father's connections, potentially compromising the industry's integrity.
Commission Defends the Appointment
While Marissa Shorenstein and Governor Hochul's office have remained silent on the matter, the New York Gaming Commission defended the appointment. Deputy Executive Director Lee Park highlighted Shorenstein's qualifications and ethical standards. The commission stated that they have implemented recusal policies, ensuring that Shorenstein does not handle cases involving her father or his lobbying firm.
Uncertainty Surrounding Online Gambling
Despite the controversy, Governor Hochul's FY 2025 Budget did not mention online gambling legalization. However, Senator Joseph Addabbo introduced Senate Bill 8185, proposing the legalization of online lottery and iGaming activities with a 30.5% tax on gross gaming revenue. This leaves the possibility of online gambling legalization in New York up for debate, despite its absence from the budget.
