Allwyn Takes Over UK National Lottery
On 1st February 2024, Allwyn, formerly known as Sazka, officially took the reins of the UK National Lottery, bringing an end to Camelot's long-standing operation since 1994. This transition marks a significant milestone in the history of the National Lottery.
A Challenging Path to Victory
Allwyn's journey to securing the fourth lottery license was far from straightforward. It faced fierce competition from Camelot, The New Lottery Company, and Italy's Sisal. Controversy arose when the Gambling Commission named Allwyn as its preferred applicant in March 2022, leading to legal disputes and challenges from Camelot and its technology provider, IGT.
Camelot's legal challenge centered on the Commission's communication and concerns about the renewal decision. Eventually, Camelot withdrew its challenge, clearing the path for Allwyn to assume control.
Camelot's Legacy Lives On
Although the Camelot name will no longer be associated with the National Lottery, Allwyn has acquired Camelot UK and Camelot Lottery Solutions. These acquisitions allowed Allwyn to gain valuable insights into the lottery's operations.
Building an Allwyn Team
Preparations for the takeover included assembling a strong UK leadership team, featuring Andria Vidler as CEO, Alan Artz as CFO, and other key figures in various roles. Allwyn is poised to bring fresh perspectives to the National Lottery and shape its future.
With this historic transition, Allwyn takes charge of one of the UK's most iconic institutions, signaling a new era for lottery enthusiasts and good causes alike.
