Culinary Union Gears Up for Strikes

Culinary Union members in Las Vegas are preparing for strikes in a bid to secure new contract agreements with casino hotels on the Strip and downtown. The tension is mounting as employees at various properties are ready to walk off their jobs, emphasizing their need for updated contracts.

Friday's Informational Picket

Tomorrow, an informational picket is set to take place, involving Culinary Union members from the Rio Las Vegas, SAHARA Las Vegas, and Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. This demonstration aims to raise awareness but is not a full-fledged strike. The Culinary Union encourages customers and community allies to support them by not crossing the picket line on Friday and Saturday.

Strike Deadline Extended to Monday

The Culinary Union has extended the strike deadline to Monday, February 5, for ten downtown Vegas properties that have not yet reached contract agreements. These properties include Binion’s, Circa, Downtown Grand, El Cortez, Four Queens, Fremont, Golden Gate, Golden Nugget, Main Street, and The D Casino.

Progress Amid Negotiations

Currently, 2,600 workers in the Las Vegas hospitality industry are operating without contracts and are seeking a five-year agreement. Negotiations are ongoing as Culinary Union members work toward reaching definitive agreements.

Union's Previous Victories

While negotiations continue, the Culinary Union has already achieved significant victories, successfully negotiating with MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, and Wynn Resorts. Agreements have also been reached with several Strip independents and the Plaza casino in downtown Vegas.

Super Bowl Preparations at Risk

The potential strikes pose a threat to Super Bowl preparations, granting the Culinary Union added leverage in their pursuit of new contracts. The situation remains tense as both sides attempt to reach a resolution before the strike deadlines.
