In December 2023, New Hampshire witnessed a significant drop in its sports betting activity compared to the same period in the previous year. The total handle for the month amounted to $78.8 million, representing a 13.3% decrease from the $90.9 million recorded in December 2022. However, there was a slight improvement of 0.4% compared to November 2023, when the handle was $78.5 million.
Online and Retail Betting
Players in New Hampshire placed a total of $67.0 million in online bets during December, with an additional $11.7 million wagered at retail sportsbooks across the state.
Revenue Decrease
Gross gaming revenue also saw a decline, standing at $7.7 million for December. This marked a 7.2% decrease from the previous year's $8.3 million and a 6.1% drop compared to November's $8.2 million.
Online Dominance
Online sports betting contributed significantly to the revenue, accounting for $6.7 million in December, while retail wagering brought in $972,039.
Exclusive Rights of DraftKings
It's worth noting that all online bets in New Hampshire are placed through DraftKings, which holds exclusive rights to sports wagering in the state, a privilege secured in November 2019.
Tax Collection
The state collected $3.4 million in taxes from sports betting activities in December, with $2.9 million coming from online wagering and $437,417 from retail sportsbooks.
Half-Year Figures
December marked the halfway point of the state's 2023-24 financial year, and the handle for the six-month period reached $377.6 million. Of this, $328.1 million was wagered online, while $49.5 million was placed through retail sportsbooks.
Revenue and Taxation
During the same six-month period, revenue amounted to $37.7 million, with online betting generating $33.5 million in revenue and retail contributing $4.2 million. Tax collections totaled $16.5 million, with $14.6 million coming from online activities and $1.9 million from land-based sportsbooks.
