Record Growth in Spain's Online Gambling Market

In 2023, Spain’s online gambling market witnessed unprecedented growth, positioning itself as one of Europe’s most dynamic sectors.

Surging Revenue and Active Gamblers

According to Spain’s Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), the gross gambling revenue (GGR) soared to €1.24 billion in 2023, marking a substantial 28.4% increase compared to the previous year. The number of active gamblers also saw a steady rise, reaching over 1.6 million.

Dominance of Casino and Betting

The casino segment emerged as the frontrunner, constituting 50.5% of the total revenue with €624.8 million. Following closely behind was the betting sector, contributing 39.8% with €491.8 million in GGR. Meanwhile, poker, bingo, and contests recorded comparatively lower revenues.

Sectoral Growth Dynamics

Within the casino segment, slots played a pivotal role, accounting for 61.6% of the total revenue and experiencing a notable 25.3% growth from the previous year. On the other hand, the betting sector witnessed significant growth, particularly in in-play sports bets, which surged by 48.7%. Other forms of fixed-odds betting also experienced exponential growth, marking a staggering 191.9% increase year-on-year.

Amidst these impressive figures, Spain solidifies its position as a thriving hub for online gambling, offering promising opportunities for further expansion and innovation.
